Diabetes may have protective effect against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (June 1, 2015 - Insidermedicine) From Boston - Diabetes may have a protective effect against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, according to research published in JAMA Neurology. Researchers compared over 3,600 ALS patients to over 365, 000 controls. Participants had an average age of 65.4 years. Nearly 10,000 patients had diabetes. Results showed that diabetes, but not obesity, was linked to a lower risk of ALS.
